Florida is by far one of the most hospitable places in the country to conduct your flight training, but if you live outside the state, it can be hard to find the right school for you. I know this personally because I grew up in New Jersey, but knew that if I wanted to progress my flight career forward, I would need somewhere where I could train daily. Choosing a flight school in florida can be quite easy if you know where to look. This article is designed to help you in your quest to find the right one to help you earn your commercial pilots license, and more.  Below are a few questions you need to have answered before deciding on the right school for you.

What is The Reputation of The School?

This is a big one that is often overlooked by the novice pilot.  There are many schools, such as ATP flight school, which have numerous locations throughout Florida, and have been training students since the late 1980′s.  Their aircraft are well maintained, their instructors are professional and well trained, and with locations on all four corners of the state it makes choosing a location easy.

That being said, their are a number of unscrupulous flight schools throughout Florida that have gained a not so great reputation.  Take a look at the now defunct “Jet University” which use to be a flight school in ft lauderdale.  The owner of that school suddenly closed his doors one day and left dozens of students “out on a limb” without refunding their money as he went in to bankruptcy.  You can learn more in the video below:

It is important to know that schools like this are very rare, and the majority of them are reputable, but it just goes to show you that you need to conduct your research before plopping down $70,000 for a flight training program.

another thing you need to ask is:

How Experienced Are The Instructors

I can tell you from experience that an instructor just out of flight school with his instructing license is not going to know nearly as much as a guy that has thousands of hours training students.  When I went through my primary flight training (private license), I was fortunate enough to have some great instructors that were available to me.

However, as I progressed into my advanced training (instrument, multi engine, commercial, etc.) many of the instructors I had were very new, often just graduating from instructor school a few months prior.  Not only could I tell that they had very little experience teaching, but the quality of their instruction was lackluster.  Sometimes I found that I actually knew MORE then they did!

When you visit a Flight School, here are the questions you need to ask:

-  What are the instructors rates?  (sometimes they vary depending on the school)

-  How long have they worked there?

-  What is their students pass rate?  (80% or above is great)

-  What is their availability?  (some are only available a couple times a week)

A good flight instructor is one that can help you progress through your flight training at a good pace.  Many times instructors don’t make themselves available enough, so you get stuck with up to 2 weeks in between training and starting all over again.

What Are Your Goals?

One of the most important things to help you decide on a flight school in Florida is what are your goals.  If you are just looking to get your private pilots license and that’s it, then a smaller, local school is right for you.  But, if you are looking to become a professional commercial pilot, than some of the flight academies like Phoenix East or ATP flight school in panama city will get you there.

- Are you looking to make a career out of Aviation?

-  Do you just want to be able to take your friends up for a spin?

-  Are you looking to buy an aircraft for business purposes?

These are just some of the questions you need to ask yourself to help determine the right school for you.  The bottom line is choosing a flight school in fl is alot more than just picking one out of a hat.  It takes a bit of time, research, and comparisons to help you choose the right one.

Orlando is home to some of the most fun attractions in the world, but did you know there are close to a dozen flight schools to get your pilots license?  Orlando offers some of the finest flight schools in the country, and you can get everything from you instrument rating, to multi engine training.  Take a look at these great flight schools in the greater Orlando area.

The area of Daytona Beach is a haven for transportation enthusiasts.  “The World’s Most Famous Beach” is well-suited geographically and climatically for the stock car racing at historic Daytona Speedway, the boating on the Intercoastal Waterway, and the flying originating from several large pilot training centers.

Steeped in rich history, St. Augustine and Jacksonville maintain two completely different cultural identities.  St. Augustine, the oldest European settlement in the United States, is a study of contrasts between ancient and modern: it’s home to an old 300-year-old Spanish fort, as well as a new Extra 300 owned by famed aerobatic pilot Patty Wagstaff.  As Florida’s northernmost metropolis, Jacksonville has long maintained an antebellum lifestyle, particularly when classic Southern derring-do was demonstrated by the city’s residents during aviation’s early days.

I actually have been to several flight schools in the west palm beach area, mainly just to do a checkout or rent an Skyhawk for a few hours.  The majority of them are located at F45 (North Palm County) and Lantana, and their are none to my knowledge that operate out of KPBI (West Palm Beach International). Whats great about this area is the amount of instrument approaches and local airports you can fly to.  Nearby Stuart offers a wide variety of GPS approaches, and Pahokee offers one of the only circle to land vor-dme approaches in south Florida.

Take a look at some of the schools I have come across below.

North County Flight Training
11550 Aviation Blvd Suite #4
West Palm Beach, FL 33412
(561) 694-9282

This flight school is a certified cessna pilot center located at North Palm Beach County Airpark (F45).  The school uses 3 different types of primary aircraft for its training, including 2 Cessna 172's, one of which uses the Garmin G 1000 flight display, and a Piper Seneca II for advanced multi engine flight training.  You can also enjoy a introductory flight with one of there qualified instructors for as little as $99.  Aircraft are also available for rent, excluding multi-engine.

Palm Beach Flight Training
2633 Lantana Road # 42
Lantana, FL 33462
(561) 963-8821

With a wide array of aircraft ranging from Cessna 152's all the way to a Cessna 206, Palm Beach Flight School is one of the premier schools in the southeast coast of florida.  With over half a dozen instructors they are also one of the largest schools in the area.  You can book your flights through there online scheduling system, and start your flight training with a cheap introductory flight.  You can take an IFR refresher course, get your multi engine rating, or even take a flight to the Bahamas with one of there qualified instructors.  This school is located at Lantana Airport which is just south of Palm Beach International airport (PBI).

Sunquest Aviation
11600 Aviation Boulevard
West Palm Beach, FL 33412
(561) 627-0037

Since 1994, Sunquest Aviation has been providing quality flight training at affordable prices to hundreds of students.  They are also a certified CATS testing center so you can take your required written exams there should you choose to.  They host a wide variety of aircraft for flight training including Diamond, Cessna, Piper, and Pitts aircraft, as well as an indoor level 1 simulator.  Located at North Palm Beach County Airpark, Sunquest is open 7 days a week from 9 am - 7 pm.  They also offer financial aid for those that qualify.

That's it for West palm beach flight schools.  Learning to fly can be one of the most exhilarating experiences you will ever come across, and getting your pilots license at these great schools can help you achieve your goals.  Whether you are looking to advance your skills by earnings a multi engine or instrument rating, or just looking to get your first solo, they can help you get there.
